First Steps
First
Step:
Think
about the charity or cause you’d most like to help.
Maybe you or someone you know has benefited from the service of a
particular organization. Maybe you’re an active volunteer or
believe in the mission of a specific organization.
Second
Step:
If
you need more help or you need to know more about a particular
organization,
do some investigating. Call the charity directly and ask to meet
with them. Find out what opportunities are available for giving, and
how your gift will allow them to continue their good work. If you
wish to be recognized for your generosity (or wish to be anonymous),
ask them about their donor recognition policy.
Here's who
to talk to if you need assistance.
Third
Step:
Talk
with your family and loved ones
and make them aware of your intentions so they can support your
achieving your charitable goals. Let them know how you wish to be
recognized if the gift will be realized after your death.
Fourth
Step:
Consult
the appropriate professional advisors.
Your lawyer, financial planner and/or tax accountant will help
ensure the type and timing of your gift is appropriate to your
financial situation and maximizes the advantages to you and to the
charity.

to talk to if you need assistance.
It’s
also best to involve the charity’s planned giving professional in
the early stages. He or she can let you know about opportunities
that may be available for giving for a specific purpose or to a
specific program. They would also like to thank you for your
generosity.
